As You Like It, Act II, Scene VII [All the world’s a stage]
William Shakespeare, 1564 - 1616
Jaques to Duke Senior - All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages. At first, the infant, Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms. Then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel And shining morning face, creeping like snail Unwillingly to school. And then the lover, Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad Made to his mistress’ eyebrow. Then a soldier, Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard, Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel, Seeking the bubble reputation Even in the cannon’s mouth. And then the justice, In fair round belly with good capon lined, With eyes severe and beard of formal cut, Full of wise saws and modern instances; And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts Into the lean and slippered pantaloon, With spectacles on nose and pouch on side; His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide For his shrunk shank, and his big manly voice, Turning again toward childish treble, pipes And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all, That ends this strange eventful history, Is second childishness and mere oblivion, Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.
SHOW ADVICE <-- Please Read!!!
If you have never been to an EGC Show, you are in for a treat! However, many Parents do not know what to expect, so we have some advice we strongly recommend. The advice will lead to the best experience for you and you little gymnast.
A) LOCATION: The Show is hosted at our Harborcreek Gym (only). Every year we get a few parents who don’t read this and show up at the West Gym wondering where everyone is??? Then, they yell at my secretary - for their mistake. The Harborcreek Gym is located at 4725 Park Harbor Dr. - Erie, PA 16511. It’s about a 15 minute drive for EGC West (depending on traffic!) Which 5:00ish is ‘Rush Hour’, so leave a little extra time.
B) DATE: We do a series of 5 different Shows. Your child & their class is scheduled for 1 of those nights only. Please make sure that you checked the schedule (we put another online) so you are here on the correct night.
C) TIME: Again, the gymnasts need to be here by 5:15pm. This allows us some ‘preshow’ time to get them ready for the show. You may walk them into the gym lobby, and we will take them from there. At that time you can get a good parking spot, go fill up your gas tank, get some food from our Booster Clubs Concession Stand or basically host a “Tailgate Party”. We will NOT open the doors to the audience until 5:45pm. Typically a long line will start to form around the back east doors to the gym. If weather is poor, we will switch to our lobby entrance, however will not open the doors till 5:45pm.
D) PARKING: Parking for the event will be in the West field next to the gym. Handicapped & Elderly parking will be reserved in our main lot. Please be careful walking from the Parking Area to the Gym. We typically scan the field and place road cones near our Ground Hog dens. We love the Ground Hogs, so we don’t want to eradicate them for a few shows a year, so please watch your step on the way in.
E) AUDIENCE: Obviously the audience consists of a lot of Parents. However this is a great ‘family type’ show that is entertaining for Grand Parents, Relatives, Siblings…. We even get people who come that have no ties to the gymnasts in the gym, and just come to see the show each year. Typically we end up with crowds of 500+ attending each night of the show. The seating is bleacher style & standing room only. This is partially why we break the school up into 5 separate shows. We also break the show up into multiple nights to keep each show about 2 hours or so, and not bore you with 10 Preschool demonstrations.
F) AUDIENCE MANNERS: The kids love a good crowd, so feel free to cheer and applaud as much as you like. If anything, the show is something like a concert. Despite encouragement to the contrary, we urge all Audience members to stay throughout the entire show. We get it! We understand that you all have busy lives, siblings that have to be other places…. However this is a once a year activity for your child. During the show, your child will be cared for by our staff. They will have popcicles, gifts, sit with their friends… and just be kids, so you don’t have to worry about them during the show. We consider it rude to immediately grab your child after the performance and run out the door. The show moves fast and typically in chronological order from youngest and least experienced to our National Level athletes. Thus, leaving early does not give your child the opportunity to learn, grow, and become motivated about their chosen activity. So, we ask that you make plans for the evening - just once a year, and both you and your child enjoy a night at the show. If your other child has baseball practice, they can miss a night. If you need to cut the grass, do it tomorrow. Each child has worked extremely hard to get the skills they are performing. They ALL deserve recognition, and it’s considered rude to be climbing around the bleachers to leave after your child performs.
G) DRESS COOL: I don’t care if it is snowing the week of the show - DRESS COOL & wear lots of deodorant! With 4-5 hundred spectators, 100+ anxious gymnasts, concert lighting equipment… the gym gets hot! We have fans & exhaust fans, however it will be hot. This year with the show theme of Rio de Janeiro and the Amazon Jungle, we will have the perfect Jungle climate in the gym.
H) CONCESSIONS & GIFTS: Each year the Team Lightning Booster Club operates a Concession Stand. They typically have cool drinks and food and snacks. They also sometimes have Flowers and gifts Parents or Grandparents can purchase for a job well done. All of the proceeds help to benefit Team Lightning - our Competitive Travel Squad, so please save a little room for a snack.
Once again, we thank you for a wonderful school year! We look forward to seeing you at the show & hopefully over the summer! Info on the show and Summer Classes is available online.
